Disgruntled worker or someone with a inappropriate sense of humor? We may never know. But, what we do know is the popular children’s television show, Maya the Bee, streamed in the United States by Netflix, had an episode pulled, because one of the animators included a penis drawing in one of the scenes.

Maya the Bee Penis: When Good Artists Go Bad

At just after the five-minute mark of Season 1, Episode 35, of Maya the Bee, we see Maya flying into the scene, through a hollowed out log. Apparently, one of the animators thought some virtual “tagging” was in order, on the relatively blank canvas of the inside of the wall.

So, he (or she) included a drawing of a penis.

The show, originally broadcast in Europe, is an adaptation of a 1912 children’s book by Waldemar Bonsels. It features a young bee named Maya. She travels from her hive making new friends and exploring the beauty and mysteries of nature. Surely, a graffiti penis on the inside of a log isn’t the “beauty” she was hoping for!

Parents around the country weren’t too happy about it either. Social media blew up with posts, like this one from this Twitter user @ArielWray:

The production group, Studio 100, issued a statement:

An absolutely inappropriate image has been discovered in a four-second fly-by scene in one episode of the total 78 episodes of the series. The origin of this image obviously results from a very bad joke from one of the 150 artists working on the production.

 

This is indeed unacceptable to the Studio 100 Group as owner of the brand and all its partners and doesn’t reflect the quality of its work and its values.

 

Legal action has already been started. Studio 100 very much regrets this incident and would like to offer its sincere apologies to all Maya the Bee fans. At the same time the company is taking all suitable technical measures to remedy the situation.
