There are a couple of ways to describe premature ejaculation. The most common is when a man ejaculates anywhere between 0 to 3 minutes upon sexual contact. There’s another vaguer description that describes premature ejaculation as the man orgasming before his partner achieves orgasm, but this definition is often discounted as there’s no rime factor involved. One may be able to last 30 minutes or longer or more without their partner achieving orgasm!
Performance anxiety
The most common cause of premature ejaculation is due to anxiety. When the sympathetic nervous system (“fight or flight”) is activated, it can counter the effects of arousal via the parasympathetic nervous system (“feed or breed”). In cases where anxiety becomes overwhelming, ejaculation can be instantaneous and without orgasm. If anxiety increases further, it may result in erectile difficulties or even full-blown impotence.
Learning to relax and enjoy the encounter is important in being able to pace yourself, and there are exercises designed for developing confidence and proficiency with performance and mind set.
Negative conditioning
The tendency towards premature ejaculation can result from frequent hurried masturbation. If one accustoms themselves to ejaculating quickly as is often done during hurried masturbation, then the body will respond in kind during a sexual encounter.
Stamina-specific exercise like “edging” can go a long way towards teaching you how to train your penis for better performance. We recommend avoiding frivolous masturbation during the training phase- especially if accompanied with pornography use.
The use of condoms and/or desensitization creams may also be helpful in this instance.
Medications/Drugs
There are certain medications which can contribute to premature ejaculation, like cabergoline. Recreational drugs like amphetamines and cocaine can also contribute to premature ejaculation.
In the case of prescription medications, it’s highly recommended you speak with your physician if you’re suffering from premature ejaculation.
Disease
There are certain diseases which can exacerbate premature ejaculation. The most common are an overactive thyroid, inflammation of the prostate, and nervous system disorders. Medical treatment will be necessary in these specific cases.
